RE: The conservative friend of mine who turned the photo of his one day old granddaughter into anti-abortion attack.

He doesn’t consider me liberal (admittedly, I’m more center right, with left leanings on certain issues [pot legalization, environmental protection, affordable healthcare]), though he and I have clashed on abortion before so maybe that was targeted at me in a way.

Ha ha ha! That is beautiful. I might have done it if I was prepared to respond to the inevitable blowback, but I just didn’t want to spend my entire lunch break (I’m doing some OT today at work) arguing on Facebook.

No need to respond. The statement stands alone. You could add a “have a nice day” to it.

Yesterday I got sick at work, had to go to Urgent Care. Bad enough $¢ientologi$t$ are right outside of Kaiser Urgent Care on Sunset Blvd. They know better that to waste my time since I always ask them about Xenu.

Coming home, get out of the Subway station and 2 women are there with a loudspeaker uttering Jay-Zuss shit. One of them approaches me, sticks a leaflet with a picture of Trump and Jesus hand in hand.

It was time for some Tongue-Fu.

I said, “Oh so they’re walking hand in hand. Nice to see that Trump and JC are gay!”

The look on the shrew’s face—Priceless as she utters, “How dare you blaspheme the Son of Gawd and his Chosen King for America”.

My reply, “If they’re holding hands and giving each other kissy faces, you ought to say Trump is Gawd’s anointed Queen”.

Oh I scored a direct hit with that as she said, “You’re one of them Gawdless Marxists”.

My reply, “Yes. I’ve been a faithful follower of Zeppo all my life”.

Didn’t stop that fool from screaming at me, I continued to use my Tongue-Fu techniques to get her to totally melt down.

Well now sometimes old god just lets people make a bad pick, for example Saul. See old god was agin even having a king but whatevs the people wanted one so they picked a bad one. But then old god decided a king was a good idea after all so he anointed David who slaughtered tens of thousands, killed to cover up his raiding and theft, then fucked a devoted mans wife and set the man up to be killed. Sounds like the anointed drumpf.

You could inform him that

1) he’s woefully misinformed about what liberals believe; and
2) it’s conservatives who would be happy to let the child die next week if it needs surgery the parents can’t afford. Or in 2 or 3 years if it turns out to have asthma or diabetes or a peanut allergy or any of a thousand other conditions that uninsured people just have to die from.

We’re Starting to Figure Out Why There Are Mysterious Holes in The Antarctic Sea Ice

The crust of floating ice that forms over Antarctica’s Weddell Sea every winter is home to a baffling mystery. Every now and again, a huge hole will appear, exposing the dark, icy waters below.

Why do the holes appear in some years and not others? Why do they appear at all? It’s never really been clear - but now, through a combination of floating robots, satellite imagery, and seals wearing little hats, scientists are beginning to figure it out.

While ignoring the fact that in a mass-kinfe attack, most of the people attacked survive it.

Kind of like Cris Rock says: if you’re in a mass knife fight and more than 3 people die ahead of you, you pretty much deserve it. “Hmmm…..someone got stabbed with a knife……and now……someone else…..someone……else.” It’s kind of like that episode from PBS Mystery where twins are going around killing people, and the one brother launches a hammer attack on the upper floor of a business. We see this mass stampede of feet coming down the stairs. “He’s got a hammer you fucking wankers. Just stop him!!” I was screaming at the t.v.

Note it’s YouTube atheists (and other people) organising protests against this, not any church at all. No church of any denomination I am aware of has condemned this.

Yup. It reminds me of when the first protests against Scientology happened, they were done by Usenet free speech nuts, which included a lot of atheists, agnostics, rationalists, etc., and some of us who were just free speech nuts. The other churches were completely and utterly afraid to confront the “cult of greed and power.” They would call Scientology a cult because Scn’s beliefs didn’t align with theirs, hence cult. Not because of Scientology’s behavior. And that was telling.

I think these two paragraphs in the NYT story put him over the edge:

Two administration officials said they believed Mr. Trump had not been briefed in any detail about the steps to place “implants” — software code that can be used for surveillance or attack — inside the Russian grid.

Pentagon and intelligence officials described broad hesitation to go into detail with Mr. Trump about operations against Russia for concern over his reaction — and the possibility that he might countermand it or discuss it with foreign officials, as he did in 2017 when he mentioned a sensitive operation in Syria to the Russian foreign minister.

Most of my family has abandoned my sister, condemning her for being a lesbian. (They are from “mainline” Protestant churches.) The exceptions are my mother and me.

They have also abandoned me over my lack of religious faith (excepting my mother and sister and one cousin).

The issue is when someone exists around you, who’s very existence challenges your deeply-held ideas, it is much easier to reject the person rather than the idea.

Get rid of the person, and you can hold on to your position (LGBT are an affront to God, atheists cannot be happy without God, &c).

In the case of religious belief, YouTuber DarkMatter2525 made a video about this, but it really applies to anyone who does not fit into your particular view about a group.

There were multiple instances when I was a teen of parents throwing their gay and lesbian kids out of their homes and cutting them off. Also if a white girl got pregnant by a black boy. The town gossips would pass that around like wildfire.

As for me, Mom and Dad stood by me when I fell in love with a black girl. But the rest of my family didn’t so I know what it’s like to be disowned. You wind up building a life of your own and move on…

Somebody needs lots of cars to haul building supplies:

Railroad Centerbeams as far as the eye can see, Waupaca, WI

Centerbeam

Centerbeams are cars designed for carrying bundled building supplies including dimensional lumber, wallboard, and fence posts. They are essentially bulkhead flatcars that have been reinforced by a longitudinal I-beam truss down the center of the railcar. Along with adding strength to the railcar, the center truss helps protect cargo from damage caused by loads moving during transit. Due to their design, the railcars must be loaded symmetrically, with half of the payload on one side of the partition and half on the other.

On 12 August 1962, attorney and civil rights activist Floyd McKissick initiated the first of multiple rallies and demonstrations against segregated establishments in Durham, including the Howard Johnson’s restaurant on Chapel Hill Boulevard,[17] culminating in multiple protests on 18-20 May 1963 resulting in mass arrests as well as an eventual rapprochement with the city government. Future senator and presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, while a student at the University of Chicago in 1962, helped organize a picket of a Howard Johnson’s location in Cicero, Illinois, during his time as a student activist for CORE.

Conservatives have been demonising migrants all my life. There has never been a time when they have not. It goes all the way back to the Know-Nothing Party (which can directly trace to today’s conservatives).

They do not believe that migrants have rights under the Constitution (never mind the Constitution references people rather than citizens).

It is why they want a citizenship question in the Census. It is why they caterwaul about “sanctuary cities.” They literally do not view migrants as people, and never have.

A significant portion of conservatives would welcome ethnic cleansing (and say as much on social media).

Steven Anderson is a wingnut Baptist preacher who has called for executing LGBT+ people and liberals.

(No church denomination has condemned his rhetoric.)

He created a new Baptist church organisation which supports his views, and more churches are joining it.

Telltale is a former Jehovah’s Witness member disowned by his family when he came out as an atheist. He assesses religious groups using the so-called BITE model (a scoring system used to determine if a religious group or leader is a cult).

His video assessing Steven Anderson’s organisation is worth viewing. (Mr. Anderson broke off from another Baptist organisation.)

Video, 19:46. It’s worth the commitment of a third of an hour to watch.

Again, no church, none, has called out his hateful rhetoric calling for executions of LGBT+, liberals, &c. Individual Christians will, but no church. (Silence is assent.)

He is proud of being banned from many countries for his speech.

A brief story from the world of international finance that didn’t get a lot of attention, especially with tensions between Turkey and the US over Turkey’s purchase of a Russian air-defense system.

Moody’s cut Turkey’s sovereign credit rating deeper into “junk” territory on Friday, saying the risk of a balance of payments crisis continued to rise, and with it the risk of a government default.

Moody’s downgraded the rating to B1 from Ba3 and maintained a negative outlook. It cut the rating to Ba3 from Ba2 in August last year.

reuters.com

This hits Turkey’s already tottering economy even harder, because if the rating is in the “speculative” zone, large institutional investors, things like pension funds, cannot invest in the country’s bonds.

My brother, who is generally pro-police (or at least not as suspicious I am as to law enforcement motives), was fairly disgusted about this incident. We also had a discussion about how the Mesa PD rank and file voted 95 percent “no confidence” in the chief because the chief wants them to stop beating up on detained persons. The chief doesn’t have their back. *growl*

Black people are a minority here in Maricopa County at around five percent of the population (215,000 out of 4.4 million). By contrast, nearly a third of the county is either Hispanic or Latino, or to put it a different way, a quarter of the county is of Mexican heritage, with a good minority of hispanohablantes (Spanish speakers) from elsewhere. We all know about former Sheriff Joe and his thing about oppressing brown people, but the cops also have it out for black people as well. (I would also suspect that they hold bigoted thoughts about our Native population, too.)

As for “Martha My Dear,” it’s definitely worth a listen. Such a lovely song, it’s timeless.

I came to the conclusion yesterday that impeachment is never going to happen. With the glacial pace that things are moving in the House, the idea that they’ll even commence impeachment hearings before fall arrives is farfetched. And the fall and winter look set to see back-to-back “crises” (debt ceiling & sequestration) manufactured by Repubs looking to boost their chances next year by looking “tough” via threatening to default on the nation’s debts unless the Dems knuckle under to cuts to domestic spending (perhaps even the usual demands for “entitlement reform”).

So we get into next spring and the party leadership will not hear anything of impeachment because…well, it would take away from the attention on the primaries. The summer? Spooling up for the convention and that final push in the fall, when we need to unify behind our nominee and give them our full support. Nancy does have a plan…and the plan is the same as it is every 2 years: Run down the clock until the next election.

Anderson is an Independent Fundamental Baptist. It’s not a denomination, and each church tends to group itself around the colleges that their preachers went to. So there’s a Hyles-Anderson faction, a Golden State faction, etc. The IFB church near my house is aligned with Faith Baptist Bible College and Seminary, for example.

Anderson went to Hyles-Anderson (not a relation) College for a couple of years but broke away because he didn’t agree with some of Jack Hyles and Jack Schaap’s doctrines. (Schaap is currently cooling his heels in a federal prison after being convicted of violating the Mann Act.) He started “Faithful Word Baptist Church” over in Tempe over a decade ago and first came to everyone’s attention when one of FWBC’s members wanted to carry a firearm into an Obama event in 2009.

This “New IFB” is closer to being more of a denomination headed up by Anderson than being a grouping of Independent Fundamental Baptist churches. A lot of the men running NIFB churches are products of either training under Anderson or under one of his chief acolytes, like Roger Jimenez of Sacramento. The pastors I’ve watched all seem to share Anderson’s penchant for screaming at people while preaching.

Other things they share that are NOT your standard IFB fare: they’re seriously anti-semitic and they don’t believe in a pre-Tribulation Rapture. Either of those will get you kicked out of any loose IFB association. Less surprising is their vocal anti-LGBTQ, anti-abortion and anti-feminism stands. I remember watching an Anderson sermon where he told the women he’d better not hear them saying “Amen,” because that was only for the men.

I honestly don’t know how long this “The New IFB” is going to last. Anderson is a hothead and if you cross him or disagree with him on something that is a precious doctrine to him, he will kick you out. He gave notorious young earth creationist and convicted sovereign citizen Kent Hovind the left foot of fellowship after the latter divorced his first wife in early 2016.

A friend of mine asked me the other day if I would go to Faithful Word with him and film while he taunted Anderson. I told him “absolutely not—they pack heat.” The other reason is I visited there once (because Hovind was there) so I’m a known quantity. But seriously, y’all know I picket churches. The only way I will go near FWBC is if I am wearing body armor and with police protection. That’s how much these people unnerve me.

As for other churches speaking out against them, frankly, I kind of understand them not wanting to give this blowhard any more attention than he’s already getting. What HAS bugged me about this week’s coverage is the press has not linked up Anderson with Grayson Fitts, the former detective in Knoxville and pastor of “All Scripture Baptist Church”, and Patrick Boyle of the Orlando church that’s sponsoring the “Make America Straight Again” conference. They’re all part of the New IFB.

My personal opinion? The New IFB is a cult of personality, with Anderson at the head. And each one of those churches are part of what I call “little cults everywhere,” high control organizations of a religious nature. They’re a scary bunch.

The problem with not calling them out (that is, other churches) is the same problem with the claim you should not call out crackpots.

The point of calling them out (not an individual, but a church organisation) is as a vaccination, so others who might not have heard the NIFB’s ideas are inoculated against them.

If churches are claiming this or that group is “no true Christians (tm)” then those groups should be calling it out.

In the meantime, the NIFB grows.

“Blight on the landscape?”

Deer in the USA are hunted primarily because their natural predators have been wiped out, coupled with agriculture providing much more food stock for them.

Here the big hunting seasons are for deer, elk, antelope, and Canada geese.

Well, I plan to ask the bloodthirsty wannabe killers of women who get abortions tomorrow what they think about LGBTQ people. I suspect I’m going to find out that they’re just as hateful as the NIFB, but that they’ve chosen to concentrate their ire on women who have abortions.

I’m also going to ask if they think Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) should be executed because she had a willing, voluntary abortion. Rep. Jayapal wrote about her abortion earlier this week in the NYTimes. The answer to that one is yes, I just want to get them on video admitting it.

You also see why Putin is such a hero to our Fundamenalist Christians: autocratic, oligarchic and theocratic. Only thing they would disagree on is that they prefer Fundamentalist Protestantism over Russian Orthodoxy.

YouTuber Prophet of Zod (a former politically-conservative Christian, now a politically-liberal atheist) discusses that in a video about the brohaha over the “Arthur” episode that Christians hounded off the air on PBS in Alabama (and it wasn’t just fundamentalists, but Christians from across the spectrum of their faith).

The clip in question is roughly ten seconds out of the whole show.

The video is titled “Do Christians want Tolerance or Dominance”

He notes that in the PBS episode in question, the children of Mr. Rathburn’s class first think he is marrying a rather severe woman, but in the episode it turns out that she is his sister.

That led to his favourite comment from social media, that Alabama Christians were upset that Mr. Rathburn wasn’t marrying his sister.

Part of the problem. The other part is that they have extremely tight gun control there so the fascist right makes a big deal about “knife crime”. And to be sure, the English police would have a conniption at my swords ;)

In our part of the world, deer have to be culled as they are a blight on the landscape and destroy forests. But the hunting is not done during the breeding and fawning season

DC-Metro (DMV) area it is the same, kinda. All natural predator have been eliminated and human habitation generates a huge amount of forest edge. Deer proliferate, then starve in the winter. They wander through my neighborhood in family groups with just about zero fear of human. And, they eat my Hostas and other plants.

We are devolving to a feudal aristocracy with mercenaries with no allegiance but obey doing the fighting. No, we haven’t gone far down the path, but the whole idea of a standing army was to avoid mercs and militia. We’ll end up breaking up into smaller groups than the US unless there is a reunification of ideals. And, I don’t really see that coming, currently.

Given that it’s the 50th anniversary of the Tate-LaBianca murders, this might not be surprising — but the film was a very bizarre surreal take on the Manson cult, with a guest appearance by an FBI agent working for Hoover. The violence was almost on par with a Quentin Tarantino film, but the public should be seeing the real thing later this summer.

I’m horrified how calm we are about this child abuse. It’s as if we’re too exhausted to even march. Democrats in the House need to haul the DHS Acting Secretary for questioning. Enough is enough.

Here is the problem, as I see it. In the past year 50000+ unaccompanied minors have come across the border(yeah, that problem hasn’t gone away it has just been overwhelmed by family units). They are minors so you can’t just give them a court appearance date and send them on their way, you have to either place them with a foster family or find a family member in the US to place them with and in the mean time you have to keep them in a group setting. These places don’t need to be shut down, they need independent oversight and/or congressional oversight.

The foster care system is already pretty overwhelmed in this country, I can’t imagine increasing the number of foster kids by 20%(most of whom may not speak english) can be easy.

“It is difficult for the ordinary voter to come to grips with the notion that a truly evil man, a truthless monster with the brains of a king rat and the soul of a cockroach, is about to be sworn in as the president of the United States for the next four years… . And he will bring his gang in with him, a mean network of lawyers and salesmen and pimps who will loot the national treasury, warp the laws, mock the rules and stay awake 22 hours a day looking for at least one reason to declare war, officially, on some hapless tribe in the Sahara or heathen fanatic like the Ayatollah Khomeini.”

Khomeini spent more than 14 years in exile, mostly in the holy Iraqi city of Najaf. Initially, he was sent to Turkey on 4 November 1964 where he stayed in Bursa in the home of Colonel Ali Cetiner of the Turkish Military Intelligence. In October 1965, after less than a year, he was allowed to move to Najaf, Iraq, where he stayed until 1978, when he was expelled by then-Vice President Saddam Hussein. By this time discontent with the Shah was becoming intense and Khomeini visited Neauphle-le-Château, a suburb of Paris, France on a tourist visa on 6 October 1978.

re: #163 Eclectic Cyborg

I always get a little frumpy around Father’s Day. I never expected to be almost 38 and not have kids (sidenote: fuck infertility). I do have some kids in my life that are important to me but it’s not the same as being a dad, you know?

I do have a great relationship with my old man though so at least there’s that.

Still, what I wouldn’t give to have one of my own…

I’m ambivalent toward’s Father’s Day.

Posted a pic of my Dad who would be out marching in the streets to impeach Trump if he and Mom had not crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

On the other hand I was never able to get close to my son. Every time I tried I was turned away by his mother who told me repeatedly that I was merely a platinum AMEX card for her to draw cash out of. She is still one of the Pulpit Pimps working for Trinity Broadcasting and she indoctrinated my son into Right Wing Jesus shtick. So he went into the Marines to kill those “Sand N-Words” in Iraq and he wound up killed.

And his mother flaunts that he died for Jesus…

So today I go to the gym and then go for a meal to get my mind ready for work tomorrow.

Could the UN kick us out if we start yet another illegal war?

They could certainly ask the Security Council to vote on it. We know how that’d go.

re: #320 A hollow voice says, Inpeach…

I can only answer for Philadelphia and how the votes are counted. The machines we have use a cash register type of roll of paper to print out the results of the day’s vote. There is also a black cartridge that is rushed to voting headquarters by the police. So from one machine there are two registers of the vote. There is also the record books where the Minority Inspector (me for the 53-11) writes in the names of those who voted. There is also the book that the clerk asks those who are voting in person to sign. Absentee and Provisional ballots are counted by hand at voting headquarters. So just from one division there are several records of who voted. So if someone “plays around with the computers” there are paper backups.

In New York, we have paper ballots with optical scan bubbles, so a hand recount is possible if anybody questions the computer tally.

Paper records can have errors too. It’s not always a given that the computer is wrong.

My son always waits until late to message me so he can avoid talking. Don’t know why, my daughters are close to me. But as long as he is happy, I’ll play whatever role however he wants it. He doesn’t owe me anything is how I look at it.

Same here in Illinois. At least, my area of it!

Do you think Russia might actually crash our economy if he lost?

I think people are getting carried away with Russia’s actual capabilities. We do minimal trade with Russia, We have more than 10 times Russia’s GDP. If Russia tried some sort of cyber attack to mess with our markets we could bury them and Putin is already losing popularity in Russia.

My area of Illinois is machine but with paper backup so you can verify what you selected, though no guarantee that vote is registered properly but a paper recount is possible. That’s not true in all states; some have no such paper backup.

What makes you think they won’t crash it while he’s in office? They probably are encouraging his tariff policy that is leading to lost markets, perhaps permanently lost markets. Putin’s goal is to restore Russia’s lost glory (though its ultimate result is to accelerate China’s grab at power) and he doesn’t care how much damage he inflicts throughout the world.

re: #325 PhillyPretzel

We sign in and are handed a giant, machine-readable card (sometimes two — we’re initiative-happy). We use a pen to fill in little arrows to point to what we’re voting for. So we too have a paper backup.

re: #319 Decatur Deb

I could be off by a decade, if the HST quote was directed at Reagan rather than Nixon. Sounds more like his opinion of RN, though.

The last sentence didn’t seem like Nixon — we were already involved in a massive war draining our resources and there was no reason to be considering conflict elsewhere.
